The Long and Winding Road of Yasmeen Ghauri

Nothing is sure to please an elder more than word that a child of the community has gone on to fame and fortune. But in Montreal’s Muslim community, it the accompanying visuals that have created an uproar reverberating between generations.

Daughter of an imam, or religious leader, Yasmeen Ghauri’s foray into modeling was almost accidental. But her beauty quickly caught the eye of the fashion world, where her spectacular success puts her in the same league as supermodels Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell.

Images of her are a continuous presence in leading fashion magazines, and she commands as much as $10,000 a day when she graces the runways for Chanel, Armani, Valentino and Europe’s other leading haute couture houses. Read More
Yasmeen's star is rising

The famous brown-haired, brown-eyed woman sitting in the early-fall sunshine in the garden restaurant of Montreal's venerable Ritz-Carlton Hotel has undergone an astounding metamorphosis.

Just three years ago, 17-year- old Yasmeen Ghauri was a self-described "rebel'' who dressed entirely in black, from her dyed black hair to the tips of her black-painted toenails. But at the Ritz-Carlton, as the white-jacketed waiters hovered nearby and high-living patrons gazed admiringly over their lunches at her, Ghauri basked in her temporary anonymity. Queen Yasmeen
Here at Supermodel we try not to play favourites, but Yasmeen Ghauri takes our breath away every time. In magazine layouts her dark gaze draws the eye and doesn't let go. On the runway her distinctive style not so much shows off the clothes as positively flaunts them.
"I think my secret is that I'm double jointed," laughs Yasmeen, talking about her infamous 'wiggle'. Yasmeen is speaking from her apartment in New York, where she has lived for the past four years. "Also when I started doing the shows, the models were all showgirls. It was so different to today - so professional and *so* strict. I remember doing Versace, and feeling very intimidated, like I had to do something. That's probably where I got up the nerve to go for it."
Can Islam and fashion career mix?

The father of supermodel Yasmeen Ghauri, who was born in Canada in 1971, also disapproved of her profession. Moin Ghauri is a former imam of the Islamic community of Quebec. In interviews, he has expressed strong disapproval of his daughter's chosen career. "She is still my daughter, but her actions are completely contrary to the teachings of Islam," he said in one interview. "She is doing something that encourages others to be doing bad things."
