madeinatlantis LONDON TRAVEL GUIDE RUSSELL SQUARE Bloomsbury and Gower Streets A cluster of cheaper hotels, however, in almost as pleasant a setting, is found at the far side of the Square (an easy walk from the Russell Square tube exit) on the famous Bloomsbury Street, which bears that designation for about a hundred yards, and then becomes Gower Street. Both names are identified with a brilliant period of pre-World War I British intellectual history (Sidney and Beatrice Webb, George Bernard Shaw, Virginia Woolf), and you'll find book-publishers, university buildings, philanthropic societies and schools all along the length of the street. The higher-priced budget hotels are on Bloomsbury Street, in an exquisite series of Georgian town houses. One of these, the Gresham Hotel, is directly around the corner from the British Museum. The Morgan Hotel, at 24 Bloomsbury Street, is highly recommended, as is the Regent House Hotel at 28 Bloomsbury Street, with only slightly higher prices. All three hotels are located just next to tiny Bedford Square, a well-known publishing center which intersects Bloomsbury Street and Gower Street. On the other side of Bedford Square, Bloomsbury Street becomes Gower Street, and the hotel prices descend as you move deeper into the area of the University of London. The Arran House Hotel, 77 Gower Street, is my choice here, because of its colorful, ex-British Army-officer-proprietor (Maj. W. J. Richards), who puts you at ease. Try, also, the Maree Hotel, 27 Gower Street, garden in the back; the Arosfa Private Hotel, 83 Gower Street, especially pleasant landlady; the Academy Hotel, 19-21 Gower Street, with 14 cubicle rooms; the Jesmond Hotel, 63 Gower Street; and the Gower House, 57 Gower Street. At the last of these Gower Street hotels, you'll be directly across the street from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art ("R.A. D.A."), where the greats of the British Stage, from John Gielgud to Albert Finney, have trained. By the way, a station called "Goodge Street" is the closest underground stop to the Gower Street hotels.
