Strength as affected by organic problems
Numerous case studies have been reported in the literature to bear out the relationship between decline in strength and organic drains on the system. At the onset of infection there is a noticeable loss in strength; and, with recovery, strength returns to its original level.
Strength as affected by emotional problems
Strength is affected by emotional stress. Tensed or keyed-up individuals usually obtain exceptionally high or low strength scores. Once the condition is properly diagnosed and steps are taken to ameliorate the cause or causes, a return to normal is noted. The following studies serve as examples:
A youngster received a low score on a fitness test which was administered in October of the school year. He was described as noncooperative, nervous, a constant talker and a wise guy. By March, after a regulated individual program was initiated, the youngster had increased his fitness by 150 per cent! Accompanying this increase in fitness were other notable improvements such as improved social adjustment, a more healthy appearance, and significant scholastic gains.
In a written report by a homeroom teacher the following appeared: Fall of the school year: infantile, pouting, tantrums, poor coordination, unpopular, poor work habits, cannot control talking in class, slovenly, cry baby, teases." By April with an accompanying increase in fitness scores, a significant change in social adjustment was noted.
Occasionally, in administering fitness tests you will observe youngsters displaying maladjustment tendencies in their attitude toward taking the test. As examples the following are cited:
In a girl who was proved to have a psychiatric disorder and whose history indicated that she was boss of the family at the age of twelve years, complete interpretation of strength scores was impossible because the youngster complained of spraining her back whenever she lifted. Further follow-up revealed serious behavior problems. Referral was made to a psychiatrist who treated the child.
These case studies are but a few of the many that lend validity to strength testing as a means of reflecting general physical fitness. With this type of measurement program, the deficient pupils are located and the necessary steps may be taken to ameliorate the causes of their problems.
Strength testing can form a valuable and integral part of the professional physical education program.
