Computation of Dietary Requirement

The quantity of foodstuff required to sustain physical activity depends upon the intensity and the duration of the activity. A normal 150 pound man requires approximately 1200 Calories daily to sustain his body processes in a resting condition. Vigorous physical labor continued throughout the day may raise the daily dietary requirement to 7000 Calories. If the caloric intake does not balance the calorie expenditure, substances which compose body tissues will be consumed as energy fuels and a loss in body weight will ensue. Conversely, an excessive dietary intake will cause substances to be stored in the body tissues and the body weight will be increased. Lacking the apparatus to measure energy metabolism accurately, one can use a careful record of the body weight to provide an index of the caloric balance between the food intake and the energy requirement of a program of physical activities.

Assessing Severity of Exercise

The severity of a calisthenic exercise, a sport or an occupation must be determined before it can be used during convalescence or as a therapeutic measure. The amount of stress caused by the activity may be estimated by measuring the energy requirement. Such a cost list has been prepared 1 but this must be used with caution because of wide fluctuations in values from patient to patient, and in one patient from one exercise period to the next. In addition, the condition of the specific system which has been affected by the disease should be assessed by observing its adjustment to exercise. Sonic types of slow, heavy work, such as weight lifting or wrestling, cause a strain on the heart and circulation, especially if they are performed with the glottis closed. In these exercises, the intrathoracic pressure may be increased to a level which reduces the flow of venous blood to the heart. This imposes a strain upon the heart by interfering with its oxygen supply. This type of stress is not assessed by energy determinations and should be considered separately.
