Structural Composition of a Canvas Painting
At the risk of telling you things which you already know, I would like to describe the physical structure of a painting. When a youngster who has never thought of the body beautiful except from the point of view of Movie Magazines takes his first course in anatomy, he gets a fresh view of familiar material. He learns that our bodies have skin, muscles, ligaments, nerves, bloodstreams, skeleton, etc., as well as attractive or unattractive exteriors. Now books on the history of art and collections of paintings show you all kinds of pictures, in black and white or in color, but the pictures seldom have more than two dimensions, height and width. As you well know, a painting has another dimension, thick-L ness, and that is the dimension which is the most important to the restorer. The problem is how to make you familiar with this dimension and with the concept of it.
