Where Your Painting Hangs
The safest place for a painting is on the wall. However, there are places on the wall which are bad for hanging pictures and ones which are better, not from the viewpoint of appearance but preservation. Unless you have your rooms painted or papered much more frequently than most of us can afford, or unless you live in some happy part of the world where dirt is almost unknown, you will recall that the space above a radiator or heat vent shows streaky dirt marks on the surface and is often warm to the hand.
Naturally a painting hanging in such spots collects this excess of dirt and heat; heat dries out the material of the painting, speeding up the process of natural aging and the dirt is deposited on the surface of the picture in an amount far above that normal for the rest of the room. Both these unfortunate features apply to that old favorite location above the fireplace. Even the best of fireplaces sends out a certain amount of extra soot and the chimney flue however nicely insulated exudes warmth through the wall. You may decide, as did one delightful gentleman of our acquaintance, that all things considered, he still preferred to hang his fine painting over the fireplace where it had always hung and take it down for periodic cleaning and lining on a short term schedule! Such a decision is entirely up to the owner so long as the facts of the matter are clearly understood.
The path of a dirt-carrying draft of hot air is not always perceptible. In one museum we were perplexed to find that the whole top edge of a large painting was its dirtier portion. Normal conditions would have made the lower edge the dirtier part. A re-check on its hanging position showed an unnoticed hot air vent way across the foyer from the wall on which the painting hung. This vent was depositing a load of warm airborn dirt directly onto the upper portion of the painting. At the distance involved it was the dirt rather than the warmth which was detrimental, so the problem was handled by covering the vent with a filter which held back the dirt.
