A Painting May Live Forever In the care of paintings it is essential to consider a continuance of existence. All things being equal the life expectancy of a painting is much longer than the life of a man. There are two points of view to keep in mind. The first, that the treatment employed should be the best for the immediate preservation of the painting. The second, that it should be effected so that any future removal of the work can be accomplished without in any way endangering the original painting. We who restore paintings are no more than points of contact in their long journey. There were others before us, surely there will be others after us. A restorer without this conviction is apt to make serious mistakes because he is lacking in true respect for the object he treats. Time marches on and so will the painting; a restorer is only human.
