Prince Edward Island - The Regions and Cities of the Maritime Provinces

WHILE the Maritime Provinces constitute a separate region which may be distinguished from the rest of Canada, there are many internal contrasts which enable us to distinguish sub-regions. Their boundaries are not distinct and definite in every case but in each there is either a core area or a dominant characteristic which gives a semblance of unity. The cities and towns are part of the regional pattern.
Being a separate land mass with no pronounced upland and completely surrounded by water, Prince Edward Island has comparative uniformity of landforms, climate, soil and vegetation. It is also the most completely and uniformly settled area in the Maritime Provinces. Its present population is almost completely native born and the population density has not increased for nearly three-quarters of a century. The population (139,000) is predominantly rural and its economy largely dependent upon agriculture.
The low rolling hills covered with large fields of grass, grain and potatoes, the neatly painted farm buildings, spruce hedgerows, red roads and winding tidal inlets combine to form an appealingly unique landscape. The sand beaches, dunes and red sandstone cliffs of the Prince Edward Island National Park have an unrivalled beauty.
There is only one large urban centre, Charlottetown, which is the administrative, commercial and cultural centre of the whole island. Next in size is Summerside, "the western capital", and a number of smaller centres including Souris, Montague, Georgetown and Kensington. Much of the appealing charm of Prince Edward Island lies in its rural hamlets such as Rustico, New Glasgow, Murray River, Hunter River, Crapaud, and New London. to mention only a few.
