Port Alberni and Alberni
Port Alberni and Alberni, with a combined population of 25,300, are twin towns located at the head of Alberni Canal, a continuation of Barkley Sound, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. They form a regional centre for extensive forest industries. Large saw mills and wood working plants are located in the towns.Ocean Falls
Ocean Falls is situated at the head of Cousins Inlet, which is an extension of Dean Channel, along the northern coast, approximately 350 miles northwest of Vancouver. This company town has good services, including schools, churches and a hotel.
Coastal Villages
The coastal region contains several small villages. Indians live in many of them and, in addition, have a few villages of their own. Since fishing is the main function of most villages, and water vessels and seaplanes are the only forms of transportation, they are situated at or near tide-water.
On the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino, Clayoquot, Kyuquot and Quatsino are tiny villages. The gold mine at Zeballos normally supports a few hundred people. Port Alice has a population of several hundred, many of whom work in the pulp mill.
On the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island, Campbell River, Alert Bay and Port Hardy are supply centres for logging camps and fishing vessels. A large airport has been built near the latter point.
Along the middle coast, Rivers Inlet, Bella Bella, Bella Coola and Kitimat, are very small settlements. The latter village is expected to grow into a large town in the near future, when an aluminum plant is built in the area.
On the northern coast, the mining industry supports Premier and Stewart. Along the Skeena Valley, Terrace, is a small community located 90 miles east of Prince Rupert on the Canadian National Railway.
Massett, Queen Charlotte City and Port Clements, are located on Graham Island in the Queen Charlotte group. Fishing and forestry are the principal industries. Skidegate is an old village of the Haida Indians. Airports have been built at Sandspit and near Masset.
