Kingston
![]() Kingston, county seat of Frontenac county, occupies one of the most historic sites in Ontario. Fort Cataraqui was founded by Frontenac in 1673 and was destroyed by the English in 1758. Kingston was founded by United Empire Loyalists in 1782, became a town in 1838 and was incorporated as a city in 1846. Fort Henry, now a national historic site, was completed in 1832. The capital of Canada was located in Kingston in 184144. An educational centre of note, Kingston contains the Royal Military College, for the education of Canadian Army officers, and Queen's University. The latter, founded in 1841, in the Scottish tradition, is the most noted centre of higher education in the eastern part of the province. Kingston is the seat of bishops of both the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches.
Kingston has long been noted as a lake port. In 1812 the first Great Lakes steamer was launched here and in 1827-32 the Rideau Canal was built, connecting this port to Ottawa. Kingston is still an important port and a growing industrial centre having locomotive shops, shipyards, a large aluminum plant, woollen mills and nylon factories. Kingston has many old stone buildings. It is a pleasant place in which to live and is within easy reach of the scenic area around the Rideau Lakes. Most of the inhabitants are of British origin. The population in 2006 was 117,207, and the larger urban area had 152,358.
Cornwall
Cornwall, and with suburbs containing nearly the same number, seat of the united counties of Dundas, Stormont and Glengarry, is located on the St. Lawrence River about 22 miles from the Quebec border. Its population is about equally divided between French and English. The chief products are paper, chemicals, rayon, cottons, furniture and clothing.
Brockville
Brockville, seat of the united counties of Leeds and Grenville, is located on the St. Lawrence River opposite Morristown, N.Y. It manufactures hats, hardware, abrasives, marine engines, boats and milk products. During World War II an officers' training school was located here.
Pembroke
Pembroke, county seat of Renfrew county, is located on the Ottawa River, 100 miles west of Ottawa. It produces lumber, matches and other wood products, ofrice furniture, electrical goods, textiles, shoes and flour.
Smiths Falls
Smith Falls is located on the Rideau Canal at the entrance to the Rideau Lakes. It is an important divisional point on the C.P.R. and is important for the manufacture of farm machinery.
Other Centres
Other centres in Eastern Ontario include Gananoque, a tourist centre of the Thousand Isles, the small manufacturing towns of Perth, Carleton Place, Arnprior and Renfrew; and Hawkesbury, site of a large pulp mill on the Ottawa River.
