Other Centres of Nova Scotia
While Truro is the largest and, during the forties, was the most rapidly growing town in the northern counties of Nova Scotia, others should be mentioned. An interesting and important cluster of towns is found in the Pictou mining and industrial area. They include Stellarton and Westville which are mining towns, New Glasgow general manufacturing and commercial centre, Trenton with its steel works, and Pictou, the county town, seaport and shipbuilding centre. Springhill is an important coal mining town. Amherst is a county town, commercial and general manufacturing centre. Its function as the gateway to Nova Scotia has been greatly enhanced by the building of the Fort Cumberland Hotel. A Dominion Experimental Farm is located at nearby Nappan.
The towns of the Annapolis valley are smaller. Kentville is the headquarters of the apple industry and also the site of an Experimental Station. Wolfville is the seat of Acadia University. Annapolis Royal, noted chiefly as a historical site, is the location of Fort Anne National Park and the area of first European settlement in Canada. Digby is connected with Saint John, N.B. by Canadian Pacific Steamship service.
Windsor, centre of its district along the Avon river, is the site of important gypsum quarries while Hantsport, some miles down the estuary, is a shipping point for gypsum and the site of a pulp mill.
