Which brings us to the second thing the Bible says about us -- that although on the one hand we are created by God for fellowship with him, on the other hand we have rejected that fellowship. We have had the chance to say yes to God's offer of love and fellowship, and we have chosen to say no. Instead of making God the center of our lives, we have chosen to make ourselves the center of our lives. This is a roundabout way of describing what the Bible bluntly calls "sin." "Sin" is a rather unpopular word these days. Part of the trouble arises because our conventional notion of "sin" is very different from the Biblical notion. A typical list of "Sunday school sins" might go something like this:
smoking
drinking
playing cards
going to the movies on Sunday
being too interested in sex.
We shall discover that from the Biblical viewpoint this is a superficial analysis, and doesn't get to the heart of the matter at all.
