The inescapability of eschatology
Notice that you can't escape eschatology. If you reject Christian eschatology, you only substitute some other version of eschatology. The famous statement, "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you die," is an eschatological statement. It says:
There is something more ultimate than life.
The name of this something is death.
It is more powerful than life.
It conquers and defeats life. It is supreme.
Since death is going to catch you in the end, live your life accordingly: enjoy yourself.
In a similar way, Christian faith is eschatological faith. It says, in contrast to the pagan eschatology:
There is Someone more ultimate than life.
The name of this someone is the living God who has visited man in Jesus Christ.
He is more powerful than life.
He transforms and renews life. He is supreme.
Since he confronts you in love and wants your love in return, live your life accordingly: love him and your fellow men.
Either way, you're involved in eschatology.
