Don't think that the question "What is man?" is academic or unimportant. It is a question you ask all the time, and can't help asking. Each of the following questions is no more than a specialized way of asking: "What is man? Who am I? What makes us all tick?"
"Is it O.K. to neck on a date?"
"How can I be happy?"
"Why can't I do as I please?"
"How can we avoid World War III?"
"Why is it so hard to do the 'right' thing?"
"Why do I have to go to school?"
"What's wrong with Communism?"
"Why does my geometry teacher dislike me so much?"
Since we can't avoid this question, here is our "plan of attack" for coming to grips with it. First, we will take a sampling of answers to the question that are on the market today. Then for the rest of this chapter we will look at two parts of the Biblical answer, and in the next chapter we will look at a third part, which is so important that it must have a chapter all to itself. Finally, we will look at man-in-community, in the church. In this way we can see whether the Biblical answer makes sense or not, and also how it stacks up with other answers.
